The Monte-Leone hut is located near the Chaltwasser Pass, opposite the north face of Monte Leone. The approach takes us into the impressive bowl beneath the Chaltwasser Glacier, surrounded by high peaks, ice, debris, and glacial striations. Although there is almost no greenery around the hut, the colors of the rock layers and scree fields form interesting compositions with the glacier lake. With the short walk to the Mäderlücke and the descent to Rothwald, we can make a wonderful circular tour here – the PostBus takes us back conveniently to the starting point or down to Brig. Even those wanting to descend back to Simplon should definitely take the detour to the Mäderlücke beforehand – impressive geological color patterns and the view north are the great reward for this slight additional ascent! A climb to the nearby Wasenhorn is highly recommended for really sure-footed mountaineers: From the path to the Mäderlücke, tracks branch off to the right along a geological layer to the SW ridge, the ascent is exposed along the ridge or slightly south of it, weakly defined paths and occasional easy climbing sections (I). The view is magnificent!
