The summit of Monte Lema is one of the most magnificent vantage points over the Italian Verbano and Swiss Ceresino valleys, as the elongated mountain ridge forms the dividing line between the two countries. It is correspondingly crowded in the season and at weekends, especially as a cable car runs from the Swiss side almost to the summit. However, we won't meet many hikers on the route described.
We walk past the Rifugio Campiglio - ignoring the turn-off to the right to Monte Lema - and stay on the wide, mostly flat path 3V (signposted "Alpone"), which leads through a beautiful beech forest. After 50 minutes, we keep left at a fork (signpost "Le Gemelle") and reach the Cappella Madonna della Guardia after 15 minutes. The small plateau with the chapel is a nice resting place. Just 5 minutes away is the alpine village of Alpone di Curiglia with the Agriturismo Le Gemelle. Go straight on past the chapel (signpost "M. Lema", 108D). After 15 minutes, a path on the right leads back to Rifugio Campiglio, 5 minutes later at the next fork we follow path 108E to the left (path 108D on the right via Alpe Arasio to Monte Lema, 30 minutes) and first climb up a mountain nose towards Poncione di Breno.
