The itinerary is suitable for trekking, mountain biking and horseback riding; it can be followed by the white and red 814 trail markers.
Starting from Località Peracchi di Varsi along the slopes of the mountain in a beautiful wooded environment to the Bandiera pass (930m), an important crossroads of ancient cart tracks, shortly after you emerge onto a clearing where you can admire interesting dry stone walls, the entire ascent is steep immersed in spectacular oak and beech woods. From Casa di Dosso, following the mule track, you head towards the summit of Monte Dosso and its small church; the arrival rewards the effort with a breathtaking view from which you can admire the plain and all the surrounding mountains as far as the eye can see.
The area is characterized by spectacular outcrops of rocks belonging to the Flysch di Farini d’Olmo, a marine sedimentary rock (between 60 million and 41 million years old) which gives the ridge its characteristic stratified appearance. The vegetation is typical of the Apennines, noteworthy is the Beech which usually grows at rather low altitudes (starting from 600m). The area, due to the abundance of surface water with the presence of small ponds, favors the presence of amphibians such as the spotted salamander and toad. Tracks of ungulates such as roe deer, wild boar and foxes are frequent.
Author’s recommendation
Given the proximity, a visit to the picturesque Lago di Varsi is recommended for a break in the shade of the majestic poplars and willows surrounding it.
