The mountains Monte Croce and Monte Acuto lie on the coast of Ceriale, in a dominating position above the alluvial plain of Albenga and above the coast between Borghetto, Santo Spiroti and Loano.

The path marking follows the Sentiere Liguria, mostly a red empty square.

    Author’s recommendation

No water sources along the entire route, so bring enough water and good hiking shoes.

At the start and end point of the circular hike is a free parking space at Borghetto, but it is also possible to use the free parking at the beginning of the ascent. A stairway leads through the residential area on the hillside, from the southbound road our trail branches off. Those arriving by train come up from below on this yellow-marked path. The yellow marking divides into yellow uphill and yellow flat at a sign "Monte Piccaro"; we take the steep path westward and reach the path marked with a red square from Ceriale, which leads to the transmission facility on Monte Piccaro. This path is left to the right; below us is the highway, and in a wide loop the trail reaches the ridge. A few meters to the east stands the scenic chapel Monte Piccaro with a beautiful view. The next goal is the transmission facility on Monte Piccaro, then the ridge steepens to Costa de Cane and then to the summit cross on Monte Croce. We follow the ridge another 100 vertical meters upwards, partly marked yellow, partly red. Before the descent to Toirano, the 20-minute detour to Monte Acuto (748m) is worthwhile. The descent first follows the gas pipeline; at a signpost the ridge is left to the north. The path has slipped in the forest in some places; slippery sections (especially after rain) require good footwear here. At the agricultural center in Toirano the paved road is reached. On the outskirts of Toirano there is the possibility to stock up on olive oil products and then take the bus for the last 2 km, which is recommended because the road has no sidewalk.
