One of the most beautiful and exciting excursions in the Dolomites: the classic crossing of Monte Civetta. A journey among spectacular panoramas, majestic rock walls, wide pastures, green spaces, and alpine huts. Overall easy, but it still requires good training for the development of the route (about 7 hours of walking)
Author’s recommendation
The crossing requires good coordination from an organizational point of view: the starting point does not coincide with the arrival point. To return to the starting point, you can use public transportation (see www.dolomitibus.it) or local taxi services (Zoldobus or Taxi Zoldo) that, upon request, take you early in the morning to Malga Pioda and pick up hikers in the afternoon at Capanna Trieste, bringing them back to their car.

Rifugio PalafaveraTips and suggestions
Attention! The starting point does not coincide with the arrival point, therefore it is necessary to have two cars, one in Palafavera and one in loc. Listolade, or to rely on public transport and taxi services.Roadbook
- The departure is from Palafavera in Val di Zoldo (1515 m), from there, you can climb up to Pioda locality either by chairlift (open in July and August) or on foot (about 1 hour) along the comfortable dirt road.
- Continue along the mule track (trail 556) that leads to the Sonnino al Coldai hut, among the landscapes of Monte Pelmo and Civetta. Watching marmots is likely.
- Upon arrival at the hut (1 hour), continue to the magnificent Coldai lake, nestled in a rock basin, and follow trail 560 towards the Tissi hut.
- Along gentle ups and downs at the foot of the Civetta walls, you reach the trail junction (563) leading to the Tissi hut. Here you can choose whether to climb up to the Tissi hut (about 30 minutes one way; 2257 m) along trail 563, a highly recommended destination for the uniqueness of the hut, positioned on a rock spur overlooking the Alleghe valley.
- After returning along the same trail from the Tissi hut, continue along trail 560 passing Casera Col Rean (1895 m) to reach the Vazzoler hut (1720 m).
- At the Vazzoler hut, you can visit a beautiful botanical garden that houses different alpine plant species, lush and rich during the flowering period.
- After the Vazzoler hut, just head downhill along the dirt road to Capanna Trieste (1135 m) or to Listolade.
