” ( ) Between the Causses plateaus and the Mediterranean hill ranges rises Mont Aigoual, which towers over the southern Cévennes, just 80 km from the Mediterranean Sea. Deep valleys have carved their way into its flanks of granite, slate, and quartzite. Mont Aigoual is also known as the “Mountain of Water” or “the Rain-Rich One”—its name is derived from the Latin “aqua” (water). No wonder, since the frequent—and at times heavy—rainfall supplies the entire region with water. Mont Aigoual feeds the headwaters of the Hérault, the Coudoulous, the Trèvezel, the Bonheur, and the Dourbie, which flow from here in all directions.
At the observatory on Mont Aigoual, we walk straight across the parking lot toward the large telegraph poles. We briefly follow the D-118 and, just before a sharp right-hand curve, turn off the road onto a meadow path marked GR, which runs parallel to the road. We now go straight through a gate toward a flat hilltop with another telegraph pole. We hike past the hilltop on the left and stay on the gently sloping meadow path toward the small mountain road. Following the GR markings, we turn right, pass through another pasture gate, and at the next fork, we take the left path toward Cabrillac. We now stay on the GR 60, which runs through the meadows parallel to the road and within sight of it. Shortly before reaching the edge of the forest, we take the left fork and hike very close to the road until we reach the Plo du Four saddle, which we arrive at after a total of just over 1 hour.After Plo du Four, the trail continues straight ahead along the edge of the forest; we ignore all
