Consorzio Val di Zoldo Turismo
Author’s recommendation
The crossing requires good organizational coordination: the starting point does not coincide with the arrival point. To return to the starting point, you can use public transport (see www.dolomitibus.it) or local taxi services (Zoldobus or Taxi Zoldo) that, upon request, take you in the morning from the Città di Fiume parking lot (arrival point) to Passo Giau at the trailhead.
- In combination with the hike, it is recommended to visit the Vittorino Cazzetta Museum in Selva di Cadore to learn more about the discovery of Valmo, the man of Mondeval

- The recommended itinerary starts at the top of Passo Giau, along trail 436 to Forcella Giau. Walking on a gentle and easy ascent through lush pastures and plateaus, you pass Forcella and the Zonia valley, where beautiful chamois are easily spotted.
- After Forcella del Col Piombin (2239 m), surrounded by the very particular morainic environment, the only steep and short climb of the crossing begins, to reach Forcella Giau (2360 m). Upon reaching the pass, the view is truly extraordinary, both towards the Nuvolau Averau and Tofane groups, and towards the Mondeval plateau, with Monte Pelmo in all its imposing beauty.
- Still following trail 436, you skirt the high cliffs of Lastoni di Formin on one side, and the "city of stone," a group of erratic boulders resembling a lost fortress, and the Baste lake, loved by photographers worldwide who capture the Pelmo reflected in its waters.
- You then cross the Mondeval plateau, characterized by immense green pastures and erratic boulders, home to many marmots. At the foot of a large boulder carried down during the glaciations, the remains of Valmo, the man of Mondeval, a nomadic hunter from the Mesolithic period, were found. They are now housed along with his precious history and burial artifacts at the Vittorino Cazzetta Museum in Selva di Cadore in Val Fiorentina.
- Arriving at Forcella Ambrizzola (2277 m), surrounded by larch and stone pine, you can clearly see Lake Federa, accompanied by the Palmieri Croda da Lago refuge (2046 m), reachable from the pass in about 40 minutes (1 h 30 min round trip) if desired.
- You easily reach and are practically on the level of Forcella Col Duro (2295 m), from where you descend towards the Città di Fiume refuge, accompanied by the presence of Monte Pelmo.
-
Having reached the abandoned Prendera hut (2138 m), you continue descending along trail 458 to Forcella Roan (1999 m), where you continue on trail 467. Through pastures and gentle ups and downs, you finally reach the Città di Fiume refuge (1918 m) at the foot of the enchanting Monte Pelmo and Col de la Puina.
-
From there, you descend further to sp 251, where the itinerary ends.
