In 1126, the Premonstratensian Imperial Abbey of Mönchsrot was founded. In recent years, the monastery complex, whose towers resemble the Kremlin in Moscow, has been restored in a manner respectful of its historical significance. On the edge of town stands the cemetery church of St. Johann, featuring remarkable ceiling paintings and the high altar. The hike leads mostly through forest from Rot to the Roter Weiher, the most beautiful of the large ponds in the area. It was created when the monks of the monastery dammed the Laubach to meet their fish needs. Today, the pond, nestled among fir forests, serves as a breeding ground for rare waterfowl. The path then returns to the Rot valley and follows the river back to the starting point.
Starting from the Gasthaus zur Linde in Rot an der Rot, we walk along Klosterstraße to its junction with Ochsenhauser Straße and then turn right, heading out of town. The main road crosses the Rot and then, shortly before the forest edge, makes a right curve. Here, we turn left and immediately right again towards the handful of houses of Ziegelhütte. The path initially runs parallel to the main road and then turns left into the forest. We follow this path straight ahead, including at a crossroads at the top of the climb. At a fork shortly afterward, we go right and then through a game gate into the fenced forest.At the following fork, we keep left and continue straight ahead until we leave the fenced forest at a second game gate. At the T-junction after the Reichenbach, we walk right along the forest edge until, just under 5 minutes later, the main road becomes visible after a left curve.
