This magnificent but in every way very demanding mountain hike connects the lakes Fischboedle, Schiessrothried and Altenweiher, framed by rock scenes, with the scenic Chaumes high pastures between Hohneck and Kastelberg. In between awaits one of the most fascinating climbing routes of the Vosges, the crossing of the steep slopes below the rocky and climber-only accessible ridge of the Spitzkoepfe.
The start is at Hôtel Valneige in the village center of Mittlach, the youngest village of the Vallée de Munster (Münstertal), which, as its name suggests, was founded in 1770 by Catholic immigrants from Tyrol. At Hotel Valneige, we find signposts and markings, including the red rectangle. It leads us over the stream Fecht and beyond on a forest road about 10 minutes to the right, downstream towards Metzeral – somewhat the calm before the storm. Because soon we turn left and enter the Vallée de la Wormsa, where we reach a fenced building and again a forest road. This, however, will be left after a few minutes at a signpost to the left and the ascent begins on a path. The scenery with the rocky Spitzkoepfe and the Hohneck behind in the valley background is almost alpine. Increasingly alpine is also our trail. It crosses steeply alternating forest slopes and block fields reminiscent of the Central Alps. There are no trail junctions and thus no orientation problems. Higher up, we cross
