Valley Channel from Taufers to Glurns

Irrigation canals were once essential for irrigation in the arid Vinschgau Valley. Most of them have since fallen into disrepair. Even the Mitterwaal in the Münster Valley, likely built around the year 1260, is no longer intact today, but the accompanying Waalweg trail is still passable and offers a leisurely half-day hike between the village of Taufers, near the Swiss border, and the charming little town of Glurns, which is highly prized by tourists for its historic architecture.

From the parking lot in Taufers, we set off on an unmarked farm road that slopes gently downward (paved at first, then briefly on grass). After switching to another route (again paved), we head toward the hamlet of Rifair, 1,106 m. There, we cross to the other side of the Rambach and follow the wide, gravel bike path out of the valley. About 20 minutes from Rifair, the Mitterwaal branches off to the right, cutting across the forested slope just a few meters above the valley floor. While the route is generally easy, a short detour was recently set up due to a destroyed bridge. However, if the water level isn’t too high, the channel you need to cross isn’t really an obstacle. After more winding sections—during which the trail occasionally touches the meadows near Laatsch—a stretch directly along the Waal has actually become overgrown and impassable. So we now temporarily veer slightly uphill and pass a rest bench with a beautiful view of the Malser Haide. Back on the Waalweg, following

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
