Mittagskogel/Kepa, 2145 m
The gaze of every traveler who drives south over Villach eventually rests on the Mittagskogel – this distinctive, unmistakable pyramid south of Lake Faak. The motif with the shrine of Egg and the Mittagskogel in the background is immortalized on countless postcards. Interesting peaks have always attracted people, and so the Mittagskogel is one of the most popular mountains in southern Carinthia. It is a varied and exciting ascent from Bertahütte through the partly rocky, partly scree-covered northeast flank. In the middle section, we pass through a chamois habitat, and usually, we can observe a few animals in the rocks beside the path, peacefully grazing or curiously watching us. The view from the summit is unique: Right opposite, beyond the Sava Valley, stand the Julian Alps with Triglav in the center, and in the east the contours of the Karawanks and Steiner Alps fade into the haze. Below us, the Drava Valley spreads out and the deep blue Lake Faak glistens. From the Bertahütte parking lot, the Mittagskogel is a short day tour, but the miserable access road is only suitable for robust vehicles with high ground clearance and equally tough drivers. Those who want to spare themselves and their car this ordeal should ascend from Kopein via the Roßalm to the hut (as described in the variant).
Behind the barrier, the gravel road continues to Ferlacher Sattel and Bertahütte. We can comfortably walk on the road to the saddle or, much nicer, shortly after the barrier turn left and ascend directly to Bertahütte, 1567 m, on the forest trail marked 603. From the hut, it takes only a few minutes to descend the access road to the Ferlacher Sattel, 1500 m. The path to Mittagskogel leads almost level from Ferlacher Sattel south into the Mittagskogel cirque (some exposed spots and wire cable safety). We ascend through scree and easy rocks through the cirque lushly covered with dwarf pines in many switchbacks to the ridge height and hike on a well-trodden path just below the ridge westward to the large summit cross of Mittagskogel. The descent follows the ascent path.
