Mittagskogel, 2145 m
The Mittagskogel dominates the view of Villach and Lake Faak with the smooth shape of its north face. Even experienced hikers can reach the summit via the normal route on the somewhat gentler east side.
From the parking lot below the Berta hut (1180 m, end of possible vehicle access, barrier) we either take the partly steep and rocky hiking trail (begin left next to the barrier, WW) through the forest, crossing the forest road several times, to the Berta hut, 1527 m, and from there briefly downhill to the (not indicated on maps) Ferlacher saddle, 1500 m. Or we follow the comfortable forest road to this saddle with about 15 minutes extra time. Here a narrow path branches off at the road junction (WW „Mittagskogel, trail 680“) which crosses in a long traverse and initially only slightly ascending through some gullies, past scree slopes and through a rocky gully to the broad east cirque of the Mittagskogel. Partly quite strenuous – and very sweaty in the sun – we ascend the path built with numerous steps in many switchbacks to the Rote Scharte, 2035 m, in the east ridge and then within minutes to the large cross on the Mittagskogel, 2145 m. At the summit, we stand high above Carinthia
