Mining educational trail "through the Buchholzer Forest"
Hike through the mining landscape Buchholz
The mining educational trail "through the Buchholzer Forest" is located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Montan region Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří and takes hikers on a journey through mining history – from the Middle Ages to the Wismut era.
The hall church "St. Katharinen" with its culturally and historically important Wolfgang altar and the former main altar of the Annaberg Franciscan monastery, as well as the Buchholzer execution site marked by two rock slabs, still bear witness to the silver ore mining era today. In the last phase of mining, at the beginning of the 20th century, terraconic heaps (pointed cone heaps) were also created through uranium ore extraction, which are only preserved here in Buchholz in the Ore Mountains.
The hike is rounded off by a visit to the oldest blacksmith museum in Germany, the Frohnauer Hammer. Converted from a grain mill to a hammer mill in 1621, tools for mining and agriculture were produced here until 1904.

Roadbook
From the parking lot at the "Frohnauer Hammer" we go uphill via Albertstrasse/Main Street. Staying on the main street, we pass the Rosenholz deposit and heap, the old miner's house at Dorfstraße 62, and the "Peasant Woman". Via Alte Schlettauer Straße, we reach the Firstenweg past the sports field. A detour to the "Devil's Pulpit" (about 150 m) is recommended here.
From the Firstenweg, you have very nice views of the landscape of the Upper Ore Mountains. We reach the Buchholzer city forest, which is rich in mining-related artefacts. A variety of well-signposted paths makes the stay in this forest area relaxing and varied.
We return via the "Little Tower". A short break offers us a wonderful view of the Pöhlberg. Via the zig-zag path and Karlsbader Straße with "Holy Three Kings" and Haueisen ventilation shaft, we reach the Waldschlösschenstraße. Park and hotel invite you to linger. We turn left onto Sehmatalstraße and thus reach the starting point again.
The route is marked with hammer and pick on a green background.
