The millstone quarries are among the most interesting geological features of Upper Lusatia. The sandstone deposited here was hardened by volcanic processes in the Tertiary period. From the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century, it was mined and processed into millstones, which were exported, among other places, to Russia and England.
From the parking lot near the Kurort Jonsdorf train station, we follow the green slash marking down to the spa park and turn left onto the valley path. After about 500 m, we turn right and immediately left again, walking on the Hohlsteinweg until a signpost after 200 m directs us up a road on the right. A few minutes later, we reach the former sports field. Here begins the nature trail through the millstone quarries; the marking is still the green slash. Numerous information boards provide the hiker with all the important facts about the nature and history of the now closed quarries. Passing the Bärwandkopf climbing rock, we climb the Bärwand on steps. In the background, we can see the Drei Tische rock group. Their horizontal "tabletops" are made entirely of brown iron, which formed in the Tertiary through the volcanic influences mentioned above.
