For those who love unique hiking trails, who want to get up close to Lake Traunsee, or who might even want to take a dip in its cool waters, the Miesweg is just the thing. This short trail runs along the eastern shore of the lake beneath the western faces of the mighty Traunstein and was once an important route from Gmunden into the Lainau Valley. Destroyed in 1963 by the construction of a forest road, the trail was restored in 1979. It is the quintessential example of a trail that—from a practical standpoint—is now of little significance, yet remains interesting for its scenic beauty and originality. Walking along the Miesweg’s wooden walkways, which are secured to vertical cliffs just above the lake, is great fun, even with children.
From the turning area (parking lot), follow the wide riverside path (do not follow the road that runs to the left), past flower-adorned houses and the abandoned Moaristidl trail, to a swimming spot, and on to the Lainau forest road. At a tunnel entrance, the Miesweg branches off to the right. The trail—which runs along vertical walls and is secured on both sides by wire ropes (wooden walkways, iron clamps)—winds up and down to a waterfall with a rest area. Now climb up a steep, rugged wall via switchbacks, partly over steps (“Lainaustiege”), and back to the road, which you reach at the Lainau Bridge, 480 m.Return route: Follow the road to the left (north) across the Lainaubach stream, then through two tunnels, and finally through the forest back to the parking lot.
