The Upper Metnitz Valley is one of the most secluded valleys in Carinthia. It is located in the north of the Gurktal Alps, near the border with Styria, and runs almost exactly from west to east. It is accompanied on both sides by rather gentle, heavily forested low mountain forms. On the sunny side, there are old clearing islands with individual farms in these forests. However, the Metnitz Valley is mainly known for its art treasures, which we want to visit on our hike.
From the market square in Metnitz, we walk along the Birkenweg past the folklore museum to a wayside shrine, in front of which we turn right to the cemetery and then to the left along a path in front of the wall. This path leads us down over meadows to the bridge over the Teichlbach. We cross the road (signpost "Hemma Pilgrimage Path") and ascend through the forest to a paved farm road, which we follow to the right. At a wayside shrine, we keep left on the now gravelled path. We come to the beautifully situated, no longer inhabited Höck farm, approx. 985 m; from here we see upstream the Wintertalernock and the Eisenhut. From the farm, we go right to a bench, briefly through the forest, past a solitary house, and down to the large Gruber property. We walk between the houses and along the driveway into the valley to a bridge, approx. 975 m. Now we must not try to follow the dashed hiking trail marked on the map to the left of the stream – it ends in nowhere. Instead, we take the road and
