A circular hike from the parking area after the Haidlhof towards Merkenstein Castle, this hike passes a rock gallery, to the observation tower, over to the border ditch, then up to the Hoher Lindkogel. Afterwards, on marked trails down to Merkenstein Castle and back to the starting point.

    Author’s recommendation

On a winter hike, pay attention to snow and ice conditions – possibly gaiters, snowshoes, and crampons. In summer heat, bring plenty to drink.

From the parking area, go 1.2 km up the gravel road – past the Färberkreuz – then, below Merkenstein Castle, turn left and climb up to the rock passage. Continue upwards along the rock gallery with caves to the marked path at the wall. Follow this approximately 0.3 km to an unmarked turn left up to the Türkenbrunnen and further to the observation tower. From the meadow there, go flat left about 300 meters through the forest to a forest road. After about 300 meters, turn left, then in a right curve after 1.1 kilometers reach a left hairpin turn. From this turn, it goes almost straight up to the Iron Gate and a few more meters to the Sinawarte on the Hoher Lindkogel. Return follows marked paths towards Bad Vöslau and shortly after the signpost turns through the Murggengartengraben to Merkenstein Castle. Below the castle near the “Pottenstein” signboard, take a more pleasant, longer path about 250 meters to the right and then left down to the starting point.
