Tips and suggestions
The Mayrhoferberg in the Hausruckviertel region is a popular hiking destination featuring a 9-meter-high observation tower located at an elevation of 655 meters above sea level. The panoramic view extends as far as the Totes Gebirge mountain range and into the Mühlviertel region. The observation tower was built in 1884 by the Aschach/Eferding Beautification Association. It is located in the municipality of Stroheim and is the highest point in the district of Eferding.
If you’d like to extend the hike a bit, you can start from Stroheim and visit the church there. There are also places to stop for refreshments, such as the Strohheimerhof. This adds about 7 km to the round-trip distance.
Roadbook
ASCENT: From the parking lot (611 m), follow Trail 24 slightly downhill past the chapel to a trail sign at ~596 m. Continue straight ahead here, past a horse farm and into the forest to a dip at around 575. The long loop to the left takes us from the east side to the north side; the ponds and the summit are usually visible. At the top, near a modern house, head toward the farm with the transmitter behind it at approx. 635 m. Turn left here and head toward the west side; then turn left again to follow the access road from the farm and continue uphill to the winter parking lot. From here, a short trail leads to the right across the meadow (a sledding run for children when there’s snow) up to the cross on the Mayrhofberg (655 m). You can climb the 9-meter-high observation deck at the lookout point (~664 m), which offers a great view. 85 meters of elevation gain and a 3/4-hour walk.
DESCENT: From the summit, head west immediately along a trail and back to the farm road. Turn slightly left toward the fire department building and head toward the state highway (~616 m). Turn left again briefly and head slightly downhill until you soon see a trail on the left between a row of trees and the field. Ascend here to the edge of the forest, keep left through the summit forest for a short distance, and you’ll reach the Mayrhofberg again from the south.
Back to the edge of the forest, elevation 646 m—a lovely resting spot with a view of the Totes Gebirge. Turn left briefly, then right toward a house; if the meadow has been mowed, you can walk directly across it to the right-hand corner of the fence. Now follow the wide forest road to the left and complete the loop at the bottom on the road at Trail 24 (~596 m). On the paved farm road, turn right and quickly head back to the chapel at 611 m. 60 meters of elevation gain and 3/4 hour walking time.
Total: 145 HM and 1 1/2 hours walking time, covering a distance of ~5.5 km.
