- Suspension bridges, rock tunnels, and impressive rock faces
- along the Valentinbach stream
- Ideal for hot summer days
- A nature adventure for the whole family
This spectacular, enjoyable hike near the valley at the foot of the Carnic Alps takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete, starting at the natural swimming pool, passing through the rock arch, and following the Valentinbach stream through the Mauthner Gorge.
The return trip follows the same path back to the starting point at the natural swimming pool in Mauthen, just as the route did on the way there.
Author’s recommendation
- Up to the Felsentor, the trail is also accessible via an accessible route through Hammerle (the track shows the shorter, non-accessible route).
- In Mauthen, there are numerous places to stop for refreshments that are open year-round (though not directly along the hiking trail).

Safety information
- Wearing a rockfall helmet is recommended, as the trail runs mostly directly beneath steep rock faces.
- Footbridges, rocks, and steps can be slippery, especially after rain
- Check in advance to see if the gorge might be closed (for example, after heavy rainfall, etc.)

Starting Point - Parking Lot at the Natural Swimming Pool in the Mountaineers' Village of Mauthen
First Section – From the parking lot to Felsentor
Turn right, pass the swimming pool, and follow the path uphill toward the Valentin Bridge or Valentinbach. Continue walking along the stream and follow the narrowing path alongside a stone wall. Shortly after, you’ll reach a fork in the trail and the paved road in the Hammerle district—here, turn left and follow the paved road. After a few minutes, the road turns into a gravel path that leads you through a striking rock arch to a rest area.
Second Section—Rock Arch to the End of the Official Hiking Trail
From here (about a 15-minute walk from the starting point), the nature of the hike changes, and wearing a rockfall helmet is recommended. After the rest area, cross the first suspension bridge and head to the left side of the Valentinbach stream. The trail now runs, in places, narrowly along the rock faces and is secured with handrails in several spots. As you continue, you’ll pass through several short rock tunnels before reaching a second suspension bridge and crossing back to the right side of the stream. Afterward, a few ladders and rocky steps lead uphill to the Reiterbrunnen and then back downhill to the next suspension bridge, which takes you back to the left side of the Valentinbach. You’ll now pass the Jausenplatzl and continue along the trail until you finally reach the signposted end of the official hiking trail.
