The Similaun hut is actually already a few steps on South Tyrolean soil, but has always been strongly connected with Vent, especially since the caretakers come from there. While the cozy hiking group settles for the Martin-Busch hut, ambitious hikers even break the 3000-meter mark at the Niederjoch. When looking over the main Alpine ridge, the legendary, archaic-looking sheep drive comes to mind. Every year in June, several thousand animals start their migration from the South Tyrolean Schnalstal via the Niederjoch to summer in the high pastures of the inner Ötztal – an old, certified right of the South Tyrolean farmers that has not expired despite the division of the state. By the way, both huts are frequently visited because the surroundings are a true hiking paradise.
In Vent, 1896 m, we cross the Venter Ache and the Niedertaler Ache within the village area. Then it goes in a loop (or a short cut) into the Niedertal, always on a wide, paved path above the deeply cut stream bed on the right. After quite a while you pass the sparse shepherd's hut, 2230 m, and then proceed a bit steeper to the impressive Martin-Busch hut, 2501 m.We continue our way into the inner valley area and follow the lower path towards the Similaun hut. Soon, rubble defines the ground. Before one of the various side streams, the signpost guides us briefly uphill to the right, thus leaving the former route. We gain altitude on the moraines, walk below the Sayplatten and after the turnoff to the Ötzi find site through a terrain bay to a short secured passage. In the last part again over moraines to the Niederjoch and to the Similaun hut just across the border, 3019 m. The descent takes the same route.

Mark Zahel
