Marken, with its three square kilometers, is something like a miniature version of Holland. A historic village, meadows, pastures, and ditches on one side of the dike, the Markermeer on the other, and plenty of sky characterize this hike.
In front of the bus stop or the parking lot in Marken, we go over the Beatrix Bridge towards the village. At the fork, we keep left and then follow the right curve. At the end, we turn left to the harbor . Here we turn right, pass the harbor, and then circle the entire island clockwise on the dike. After about one kilometer, a straight dam about 2.2 km long branches off to the left, which was intended for further land reclamation in the 1930s. The plan was abandoned, leaving the possibility of a lonely and quiet walk between water and sky.However, our actual path continues around the island, where we pass a lighthouse at the eastern tip. Due to its profile, it is called »Paard van Marken« (Horse). From now on, we have a constantly changing view of some small mounds, which in earlier times were densely built due to the lack of flood-safe spots and today appear extremely idyllic.
