The March snowflake hike is the first hike of the year for many hiking enthusiasts in Saxon Switzerland. There are no real exertions, but you should definitely pay attention to sturdy footwear, as the paths are often slippery at this time of year and there is a danger of falling (up to 5 meters height into the Polenz).
After walking through the Polenz valley, you should plan some time for a cozy rest at the Bockmühle. Here, you can also get a Flensburger or Stralsunder Pils, as the landlord family is also active on Hiddensee (Buhne 11).

The hike starts at the market square and the first destination is the Scheibenmühle. However, we do not take the path along Scheibenmühlenstraße but follow Hofestraße for a few meters and then turn right immediately onto a small path (trail marking yellow stripe), parallel to Scheibenmühlenstraße. This path through the village still conveys the coziness of a small village. The path leads past small terraced ponds that were probably used for modest carp farming in the past. Along the slope, we meet Scheibenmühlenstraße again, which we follow to the Scheibenmühle. On weekends, there are also initial gastronomic offers here during the March snowflake blossom.
We cross the Polenz and now follow it upstream on the trail marked with a red dot. The Polenz winds meanderingly through the mostly wide valley. Along the river course, we see the first small carpets of March snowflakes in bloom. The path now partly runs along the river slope up to 20 meters high. The boulders here are made of granite and not the usual sandstone. South of the village runs the "Lausitz fault" (geological boundary to the West Lusatian Hills and Uplands). Since the path is unpaved and in spring partly still has residual snow, sturdy footwear is highly recommended. After a wide 180-degree river loop, we arrive in the center of the flowering splendor. One should resist the temptation to pick a bouquet, as this visual delight is under nature protection. From the Bockmühle, we start the return journey. We follow the road (from the hiking trail) to the left. Slightly uphill, after a few hundred meters, we reach a former estate (Luschdorfhof) and turn left here onto a path across the fields. A small sign confirms our direction. After a short forest section, we see the gates of a wildlife enclosure. You can first take a rest on a bench here. The enclosure has a large number of fallow deer, and it no longer surprises why almost every local inn offers game meat. After the wildlife enclosure, we follow a nearly straight field path directly into the village center and conclude our hike with a cool beer at the Erbgericht.
