Maol Chean-dearg, the great Red Baldy, is the southernmost Munro in the Coulin Forests, a hunting area (don't imagine a forest in the word "forest"!), stretching wild and barren between Glen Carron and Glen Torridon. Surprisingly good (for Scottish standards) hiking trails lead us to a summit that is a jewel in terms of views: from the Isle of Skye over Applecross to the peaks of Torridon, out to the islands and, of course, in the east, the countless peaks of the Highlands. Geologically, Maol Chean-dearg is also interesting, and the distinct, almost abrupt transition from white quartzite to red sandstone at around 800m above sea level is noticeable even to the layman.
East of the Coulags Bridge, a wide gravel track leads north. We follow it to a cattle grid, then take a path left to another track, onto which we turn left. Before it crosses a bridge (under which flows the Fionn-abhainn), a wide hiking trail branches off to the right, on which, about 500 m after the fork, we cross the Fionn-abhainn via a small bridge. Soon the Bothy Coire Fionnaraich appears on the west bank. It has served many hikers as shelter! We continue along the west bank of the river and, after a few hundred meters, see the rock sculpture Clach nan Con-fionn ahead, which some interpret as a warning finger. According to legend, the giant Fionn tied his hunting dogs there. A few hundred meters further, a cairn marks a junction, and here we now turn left upwards to gain altitude.
