Behind the whimsical dune oak forests, bent low by the sea breeze, which here (a unique feature in Europe) extend right up to the seashore, patrician families from Middelburg built their summer residences and landscaped parks in the 18th century. The medieval Westhove Castle was already being used as a pleasure palace by the abbot of Middelburg as early as 1562.
From the Schelpweg bus stop in Domburg, we walk 10 meters further, then turn right onto Van Voorthuijsenstraat and climb the stairs at the end of the street. On the dune, we turn right. Passing hotels and the water tower, we finally leave the seaside resort behind us. The magnificent dune trail offers sweeping views of the sea and low-lying oak forests.After the second swing gate, we keep to the left on the main path and take the left again at the next fork. Eventually, the path curves to the right; we pass a bunker (to the right in the background) and, at the end, turn right into the forest. We cross a bike path and turn left at an avenue lined with whimsically shaped oaks and beeches. In front of a white gate where the avenue ends, we turn right. After a right-hand bend, we turn left at the intersection and continue straight ahead on Duinbeekseweg until we reach the entrance to the Duinbeek estate on the right (not accessible).At the entrance, we immediately turn right again and
