Through a scenically highly attractive valley to a historic mountain hut

Compared to the neighboring Veľká Studená dolina, the Malá Studená dolina, the northeastern, southeast-facing upper part of the Studená dolina, is significantly smaller, narrower, and steeper. Over a length of 4 km and an area of 5.4 km², there are two high terrain steps here. The lower one rises right at the forested valley exit, has a height of about 130 m, and is traversed by the almost 20 m high waterfall Obrovský vodopád. The upper step, the mighty rock face between the side spurs of Prostredný hrot and Pyšný štít, has a height of about 200 m. Almost directly at its upper edge stands the Téryho chata, at 2015 m altitude the highest continuously operated mountain hut in the High Tatras. The Téryho chata was built at the end of the 19th century on the initiative of the doctor and Tatra enthusiast from Banská Štiavnica, Edmund Téry. The original stone building, a design by the well-known Zipser architect Gedeon Majunke, has been preserved until today, slightly modernized (e.g., solar collectors).

From Hrebienok we follow the red-marked Tatra Magistrala first to the fork Nad Rainerovou chatou just above Starolesnianska poľana. Here continue straight ahead and briefly downhill to the Veľký Studený potok stream. At the fork Pod Húpačkami, the green marking joins from the right. Over the bridge across the water, in a hairpin upwards to Obrovský vodopád by another bridge over the Malý Studený potok. Up the lower valley step in a hairpin to the left and along the green marking (the red turns right) always upwards to the cozy Zamkovského chata, 1475 m. This classic wooden building was built in 1942/43 on behalf of the then tenant of the Téryho chata, the mountaineer Štefan Zamkovský. To this day it is a very popular refreshment station in a favorable location just above the Tatra Magistrales and on the frequently used hiking trail to Malá Studená dolina. Now about 2 hours of ascent lie ahead of us: In the first hour it is still quite easy via the so-called Lomnitzer gardens through
