Taking all the requirements together, the Mainzer Höhenweg probably deserves the top spot in our selection of tours. The course of this ridge route appears bold and daring; objectively, the undertaking has much more to do with a combined high alpine tour than with ordinary mountain hiking. Even during the warm-up program up to the Weißmaurachjoch, a small sample is given in steep scree terrain. Then the seriousness of the Mainzer Höhenweg begins, which has to avoid the Puitkogel on partly tricky traverses and only rejoins the ridge line again before the Wassertalkogel. Up there, at the zenith of the route, stands the futuristic-looking Rheinland-Pfalz bivouac, as if a UFO had landed on the summit: a dreamlike spot for experiencing atmospheric sunsets and sunrises. Those who want to complete the entire route to the Braunschweiger hut in one go should be sure of their performance for a high alpine endurance march. One now moves mostly near the ridge and above the 3000-meter mark, although mostly not quite as precarious as in the first section. All in all, a challenge for seasoned mountain experts and one of the most exciting high alpine routes across the Alps!
From the Rüsselsheimer hut towards the kar to the first junction and turn right there. We ascend a moraine slope to the threshold of the Weißmaurachkar, behind which hides a meltwater lake. On the left side, temporarily flatter further, before the earthy boulder scree slope steepens forcefully towards the Weißmaurachjoch, 2953 m. We laboriously and partly with chain assistance work our way up to the saddle. There, right at the block ridge of Puitkogel a little higher, until the marking starts a traverse. The reference point is a signal pole on a pronounced ridge. Immediately behind it, there is the first key point with chain protection on a slab wall slanting downwards. In the small cirque of the Northern Puitkogelferner, block scree now predominates with only little firn or remnant ice. Opposite, we again ascend secured fairly compact rocks up to a terrain flattening. But the next hurdle is not far: one enters a grim gully and cautiously feels their way down to the Southern

Mark Zahel
