The Frankfurt metropolitan area is not called the Rhine-Main region for nothing, because neither the Taunus nor the Odenwald were the reasons for its economic significance. It was the Rhine and Main as important traffic arteries that promoted trade and production and thus brought prosperity. The short hiking tour around the Main estuary opens up wonderful panoramic views over the two large rivers and leads through the Main meadows and into the old bishop's city of Mainz with its numerous sights.
To clear up the name confusion right away, it should be noted that Mainz-Kastel was established as a Roman bridgehead of Mainz on the right bank of the Rhine opposite the old town, but since 1945 it has belonged to Wiesbaden. The reason was the border between the French and American occupation zones and later between the federal states of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate. The eponymous castle is located directly on the beautiful river promenade, which we reach in a straight line from the train station. It was first used militarily again by the French revolutionary army from 1792 since Roman times and was expanded into a fortress by Austrians and Prussians from 1816. On the riverbank, a historic three-masted ship and a sandy beach create a holiday atmosphere. Our tour follows – ignoring the sporadically placed trail markers – the Rhine upstream and over a footbridge to a peninsula foreland of the bank.
