On the flanks of the Vorderand Außerpassier passes, respectively, there’s another fair amount of ups and downs, and we’ll have to traverse two major valleys of the eastern Texel Group—the Saltaus and Spronser valleys—before completing the loop in the Muthöfe area above Dorf Tirol. Alpine landmarks of the Merano region, such as the Ifinger and Laugenspitze, dominate the panorama; at the end, the Adige Valley opens up again against a sun-drenched southern horizon. A magnificent loop, indeed!
The tour begins at Magdfeld with a partially narrow, well-trodden traverse along the hillside that takes us past the Alpenland farm inn (a short detour uphill). The innkeeper, Rosina, raises goats here. The steep slopes in this area are known as the Wiedner Berg. Near the Schafflerhof, we come upon a small road and, at the fork, keep to the right, heading uphill toward Gand and Gstear, 1,040 m. There, the Meraner Höhenweg continues along a nature trail, initially still climbing slightly. We now need to make our way out of the Saltauser Valley gorge, where some steep sections are equipped with chain handrails. Beyond the stream bridge, the trail tends to become easier. We reach a wide forest trail and shortly thereafter the Brunner Inn, 1,095 m, in the hamlet of Vernuer. Further ahead along the access road is a bus stop that is served several times a day during the season.
