To the castles near Klingenmünster

The ruins of Madenburg Castle can be seen from afar high above the sea of vines near Eschbach on the German Wine Route. It was first mentioned in documents in 1176 as a Leiningen estate, extended in 1516 and destroyed in 1689. A 5-7 m thick and 12 m high shield wall with gun chambers surrounds the 180 m long and 50 m wide castle complex. The stair towers are decorated with Renaissance ornamentation. Eschbach is a village full of donkeys. Life-size "artificial donkeys" can be seen in the streets, squares and front gardens. These are reminiscent of the nickname "donkey" given to the people of Eschbach. Not because they are "as stubborn as a donkey", but because the noble lords who resided at Madenburg Castle in the 15th century belonged to the knightly and tournament society of those "with the donkey". This means that the farmers and winegrowers who lived at the foot of Madenburg Castle in the Middle Ages were subjects of the "donkey knights".

The path from Eschbach up to the Madenburg ruins is steep - on the yellow-green line / Pfälzer Weinsteig access route and later on the Pfälzer Weinsteig / green triangle on a white dot - but no longer as dangerous as on that public holiday in 1843, when the festively dressed castle visitors fled down to the village in a heavy downpour. It is said that more Eschbachers tumbled down the valley on the wet, slippery clay floor than walked, and the festive garments no longer looked at all festive ... From the Madenburg, we follow the green triangle on a white dot and the Pfälzer Weinsteig in a south-westerly direction over the Pfaffenberg into the Kaiserbach valley. There we cross the B48 main road and walk left along the forest road above the Kaiserbacher Mühle mill. This large estate was built in 1798. In 1998, several families acquired the estate and developed it into an intergenerational, ecologically oriented living and working community. There is a farm store and a farm café. We
