The Maas hedges form an ancient cultural landscape, of which the most beautiful remnants have been protected as nature reserves. Until the mid-20th century, the ensemble of small pastures surrounded by dense hedges was characteristic of the Maas valley. Today, this small-scale landscape forms an even greater and extremely charming contrast to the otherwise vast and open areas typical of the Netherlands. The hedges once served to keep the cattle on the pastures. To make these hedges as dense as possible, branches were repeatedly bent and interwoven. In recent years, this old craft has been revived. Due to this special history and efforts for environmentally compatible use, this landscape was recognized in 2018 as the only biosphere reserve in the Netherlands. Our route is especially recommended during the blooming period of blackthorn (end of March) and hawthorn (early May). This hike also has a special charm in September/October when the ripe fruits turn the countless hawthorn bushes red.
We start from the bus stop in Afferden and go down the riverside road to the ferry . We take the ferry across the Maas and on the other ferry bank turn left onto Veerweg. Now we walk for quite a while straight along the Maas. Where the field path ends, we turn right into a narrow path. At its end, we turn left to a fork. We turn right and follow the path in a sharp left curve, ignoring the parallel cycle path and turn left before the forest. At a fork, we turn right and a few minutes later again right (sign »Fietspad«). This cycle path leads into wooded, low river dunes. At the end, we cross a small road and follow the sandy path (yellow-red), until we can turn right onto the first cycle path (sign »Maasdal«). At the right curve, we continue straight into a grass path. This path merges into a field path we have already walked. But now we turn left and, at the narrow cycle path from the right, continue straight, again into a grass path. This makes a sharp bend to the left and we walk
