Lungauer / Steirische Kalkspitze
Usually only in July are the paths to the Kalkspitzen snow-free and easily passable for hikers. The slightly lower Steirische Kalkspitze is not only more shapely and »sportier«, it also offers the nicer view and represents the dominant rock bastion above the Ursprungalm.
On the road in a few minutes to Ursprungalm, then on a wide, good hiking trail (No. 771) to the Preuneggsattel (see also tour »Ursprungalm – Giglachseen«) and the nearby private Giglachseehütte. In a southerly direction on the same path with a pleasant incline to the Znachsattel, where the Central Alpine Trail (No. 702) crosses. You then follow this to the right, first westward over a stepped ridge, then northwestward quite flat to the Akarscharte, which connects both Kalkspitzen. The left path first goes over a somewhat crumbling ridge, then easily along the flat ridge to the Lungauer Kalkspitze. The right path turns to the south ridge of the Steirische Kalkspitze, which steepens in the lower third (most difficult section), but soon becomes easier again and narrows into a short rock ridge shortly before the summit. The route is more difficult, but also more attractive than the route to the Lungauer Kalkspitze. For the descent to Ursprungalm, the ascent route is usually chosen.
