Losernstein northern loop
From Losenstein, the local highlights can be climbed in one route: Schieferstein, Sauzahn, Ramlerhöhe.
Most visitors of the Schieferstein only climb the peak itself. With a bit more motivation and stamina, however, the surroundings can also be explored, which offer some very beautiful and impressive spots. Those who like to travel by public transport, or are looking for corresponding routes, are well catered for here anyway.

Roadbook
We leave the station in a northern direction and hike over the Losenstein power plant towards the town center. We save this for the end. Instead, immediately after the Losenstein power plant, we turn right and follow the road to the federal highway. Along it, we cross the bridge over the Stiedelsbach. Only at the cemetery do we cross the federal highway and hike along trail no. 24 (Schiefersteinweg) up to the Hack. Here the path begins.
It leads us past the west ridge of the Schieferstein by the Hacker walls, the Pfenningstein, and the Stone Hunter in partly exposed terrain up to the summit. At one point, a ladder must be climbed, which is problematic for accompanying dogs. A good description can be found here: Schieferstein from Losenstein.
On the descent from the Schieferstein summit, the Stone Hunter can still be taken on a airy traverse.
On the further descent, we leave the turnoff of trail no. 25 to Reichraming on the left, and shortly afterwards turn right at the trail with the same number (25) heading north. The nicely laid out path guides us along the slope down to the junction with trail no. 467, which we now follow down to Gscheid. Keeping the trail number, we now hike past Größtenberg to the Hollnbuchner settlement and down on asphalt to the Schöfftaler chapel (the last few meters we have to go up to the chapel following the Pechgraben federal highway).
At the chapel, we turn left and now hike on trail no. 21 over the meadow on faint trails over to Sauzahn, which we bypass on now again good paths below and reach Sauzahn road. Staying on the same level, we now follow the road toward Gspörr to Spitzberg road. However, we do not descend to Losenstein yet, but turn off to the Fatima chapel, which offers a nice view of the rather interesting Talstein.
The Talstein requires climbing skills, so we leave it on the right and turn to Ramlerhöhe on trail no. E47, which offers a wonderful view of the surrounding mountain world extending into the Gesäuse. Ramlerhöhe invites you to linger - now it only goes downhill: first westward down to Hutterberg, then downhill back in an easterly direction right into the center of Losenstein.
When we reach the Gasthof Maxrieser, we have actually gone 100 m too far, but the inn offers a good opportunity to end the hike here. It's really not far now: 100 m back and down stairs into the town center. Voilà - done. The train station is now only a stone's throw away.
