The highlight of the romantic Rhine Valley is the Loreley, that treacherous rock (»lure Lei«), which juts out like a backdrop against the current and exerts an almost magical attraction on visitors from all over the world. In the past, the slate rock was greatly feared by Rhine boatmen due to its shallow areas in front. An ancient legend tells of the siren Loreley, who lured boatmen to a watery death with her singing until she herself met her end in the Rhine's waves. As one of the official circular routes on the Rheinsteig, the Loreley Extra tour was certified as a premium hiking trail by the German Hiking Institute in 2013.
Two side valleys end at the Rhine front in St. Goarshausen, the Hasenbach and the Forstbach valley. The latter is located about 600 meters upstream of the station and is a good starting point for the Loreley Extra tour. We follow Forstbachstraße under the railway bridge, find the entrance to the hiking trail a few meters further on the left between the houses, and immediately climb steeply in the hillside forest. During the ascent, impressive views of Burg Katz on the opposite slope open up. After a good kilometer and an elevation gain of 163 meters, we reach the village of Patersberg. Passing the town hall with the volunteer fire brigade, the path runs between the edge of the village and the hillside, then turns at a right angle after about 700 m. Here a completely different landscape appears; instead of narrow stream valleys, a wide open field landscape dominates. The well-marked path describes a wide curve and then approaches the forest edge, which it follows faithfully for about
