On one of the most important travel routes to the Alps, the Fernpass often appears as a traffic-plagued bottleneck. Many are not even aware that you can go hiking just next door, as destinations like Loreakopf are not very well known. Even self-catered huts are scarce here in the eastern Lechtal Alps. Thus, the cozy self-catering refuge of the Loreahütte (Otto-Reinhardt-Hütte) fits perfectly with the quiet touring atmosphere when you settle in there with a few treats. This also opens up the chance to already be at the summit early the next morning and reward yourself with special moods. However, those planning a day tour need to be in good condition, especially if the truly solitary route into Tegestal on the downhill is to be included.
From the parking lot below the castle, we briefly head toward the campsite, turn right onto the forest road, and immediately afterwards take the signposted trail. The route winds up the mountainside of the Brandwald, with the initially steep incline soon becoming moderate. You weave turn after turn, pass a hunting hut and a spring, and reach a small monument at about 1700 m. Then over freer sheep pastures in switchbacks up to the Loreahütte, 2022 m, which is very welcome as a base for the long tour. You have to bring your own provisions, of course. On the pasture grounds of Alpeil, proceed west to northwest with route number 601. You leave a route leading to the Eastern Kreuzjoch, turn toward the steepening slope to the Loreascharte, 2315 m, and reach it at the end over somewhat slippery scree. Towards the summit, you first follow a grassy ridge before being forced to descend into the sloping flank to avoid obstacles. Through a rocky gully back onto the ridge and over one last obstacle

Mark Zahel
