Long hike... Romedius Pilgrim Way stage 1 (variant)
We start at the Schönberg Center bus stop in Schönberg (bus 590) and hike below the Brenner motorway to the Stollensteig, where we join the Romedius Way.
Passing the Europabrücke and the large ÖAMTC driving technology center, we continue downhill to the hamlet of Gärberbach. Normally, one would hike through the Sill Gorge up to Berg Isel, but this path is currently closed due to landslides and construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel!
We hike uphill to federal road 182 and reach the Quo-Vadis Way, which we follow to Berg Isel.
After visiting Berg Isel with its viewing platform, the route leads via Wilten Abbey and Maximilian Street to the Golden Roof in Innsbruck.
Past St. Jacob's Cathedral, the path continues along the Inn river downstream to the Emile-Bothouart footbridge, where we cross to the left side of the Inn and board bus number 501 (direction Thaur) at the St. Nikolaus church stop at Schmelzergasse.
We get off at the Rum Dorfplatz stop (saving us 5.6 km of walking; from kilometer 15.1 to 20.7 in the elevation profile is bus route!) and follow the Romedius Pilgrim Way on the last/first kilometers to the St. Romedius chapel near Thaur.
We have reached the chapel that gives the route its name!
Returning to the town of Thaur, we board the bus again at the Isserbrücke stop, which takes us back to Innsbruck train station.
