This circular hike, which takes us from Lofer—the most beautiful town in Unterpinzgau—first to the Thälernalm alpine pasture settlement, then up to the expansive Loferer Alm, combines a varied hike with numerous places to stop for refreshments. Particularly magnificent is the impressive view of the rocky peaks of the Loferer Steinberge, which rise on their southern side beyond the valley. For a bit of scrambling on this otherwise easy hike, take a detour to the Dietrichshorn, the highest peak in this undulating alpine pasture region.
From the hiking parking lot on the old federal highway just before Lofer, we walk up the closed access road for 20 minutes across hillside meadows to the Krepper mountain inn. There, we turn left, pass the barrier, and head to the start of the forest road (Mark. 9, red). We keep to the left again and climb steeply through the forest for about 20 minutes. At the next fork, continue to the right (signpost “Zur Sodervokenalm,” Mark. 9a). The trail now narrows and curves in a semicircle toward the ascent trail coming up from the Sodernbauern farm. On the wide alpine road, head left uphill to the Sodervokenalm, 1,038 m, located to the right of the trail. At the fork, turn right toward the Thälernalm, which we reach after an hour of climbing eastward. From there, head left up the slope to the trail junction, then turn right through the southern flank of the Dietrichshorn onto a trail leading over to the ridge above the Astenalm, where, after 20 minutes, you’ll meet the wide alpine road at
