The "Windsors" and especially King Charles often and happily vacation at Balmoral Castle, the royal family's summer residence on the River Dee. High above the castle towers Lochnagar, the true ruler of the region: a huge granite-built mountain into which the glaciers of the last ice age have carved some interesting rock formations – the perfect place for climbers from Aberdeen to go climbing.
At the visitor center, a few meters from the parking lot, we learn some things about the local flora and fauna. From there we walk a few steps further and then turn right (signpost: Lochnagar). On a small access road we cross the wide valley of Glen Muick and reach some buildings that belong to the Balmoral estate of the royal family. The wide path bends 90°, but we go straight ahead up a trail and after a wooded area meet an access road coming up from the valley. We follow this to the left westwards, where through a V-shaped notch between the mountains ahead, Cuidhe Cròm (left) and Meikle Pap (right), we can see the cliffs of Lochnagar. This access road includes a ford which under normal conditions is easy to cross. We pass above the small gorge Clais Rathadan, and about 400 m after this, we reach a broad pass, in whose area we turn left onto the well-developed path to Lochnagar. Our previous path leads down into the wide valley ahead. The Lochnagar path takes us to the broad saddle
