Alpine treasure chamber amid rounded hills

Creag Meagaidh, the "rock above the swamp," is one of Scotland's best-kept secrets. Similar to the "Triple Buttress" on Beinn Eighe, the valley head of Coire Ardair cannot be seen from any road. Only the hiker can discover the beautiful landscape, the glacier-shaped valley, and the rich flora and fauna. The area was declared a National Nature Reserve in 1986, and since then nature has been allowed to recover there with a sustainable population of red deer. Here you get a small, albeit still young, insight into what the landscape of Scotland's glens might look like if the large hunts were abolished and thus the original nature was given the chance to spread again.

From the parking lot, we follow the hiking trail parallel to the road (marked with a red otter) to the former farm Aberarder. At the Visitor Hub there is a toilet and current information about the climbing and weather conditions on the mountain, and you can find out which wildlife has recently been spotted. The actual path starts here and leads us to the right past the building into the valley of the Allt Coire Ardair. At first, we follow the otter symbol, but at a fork we then follow the sign to Coire Ardair to the right. Soon we can see the cliffs of Coire Ardair far back in the valley, an impressive sight. The path to the lochan is very well maintained and in good condition; you can even reach the lake dry-shod – rare for Scotland – with trainers. Shortly after the first proper ascent, we see a reinforced path leading off to the right; we will return on this path at the end of the large described loop. After a bit over 2 hours, we reach the beautifully situated mountain lake Lochan
