The Semmering Railway from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag, built in the mid-19th century, made this pass so popular that the name “Semmering” soon became synonymous with mountain passes accessible by rail. The Bruderndorfer Sattel on the Waldbahn line from Großpertholz to Langschlag thus earned the nickname “Little Semmering.” The hiking route featured here follows this path, though hikers will not get to enjoy the train ride until the return trip.
From the Steinbach train station, head south on the road toward the houses of Steinbach (628 m) and the B 119, which crosses here, toward Großpertholz. Stay on the right side of the road, pass the Winter Inn, then turn right and immediately left onto paved farm road No. 84, which leads up through meadows to Bad Großpertholz (714 m). Walk uphill through the village to the fork at a bus stop at the southwestern edge of town. Turn left onto the paved road (marked red, Trail No. 608), passing houses, then later take the dirt road southward up to the ridge of the Streimberg. On the other side, descend southeast through meadows and woods (waystation) to the forest road junction in the Steinbachgraben. Continue straight ahead on the farm road across the stream, then head south along the Steinbachgraben, first on its eastern and later its western valley flank, up to a junction (shelter).
