The trail from the Nebelhorn region to Laufbacher Eck is one of the most beautiful high-altitude trails in the Allgäu Alps. At an altitude of just under 2,000 meters, it winds its way high above the Oytal along dizzyingly steep meadow slopes, offering ever-changing views of the landscape. There, the famous Höfats rises up with its seemingly vertical grassy slopes and sharp ridges. The blue eye of Lake Seealp glistens from the meadows. The bizarrely shaped mountain silhouette of the Schneck captivates the eye. Ruggedly fractured rock faces of Hauptdolomite contrast with the flysch mountains, covered in greenery all the way up. On the flower-filled meadow slopes, you can discover many rare plants. Countless ridges and peaks stretch toward the horizon. Finally, at the Laufbacher Eck—a steep grassy triangle between the Oy and Bärgündelet valleys—the view of His Majesty the Hochvogel, surrounded by his rocky retinue, is mesmerizing. The high-altitude trail now descends into the head of the Bärgündele Valley and continues on to the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus. For a day hike, it makes sense to return to the Nebelhornbahn via the same route. With the constantly changing views, there’s still something new to discover on the way back. Another option is the descent into the Oy Valley, though this requires some stamina and, with a total descent of over 1,600 meters, really takes it out of your legs.
The Nebelhornbahn takes us comfortably from the valley station in Oberstdorf up to the Höfatsblick station, at 1,929 m. There, we get our first glimpse of the magnificent panoramic views that will accompany us on the tour. From the cable car building, we walk past the playground on the left and then turn right onto a wide gravel path leading down to the valley station of the Koblat chairlift. The path is lined with wooden sculptures and information signs that provide interesting facts about the mountain region. We hike out of the small valley below the cable car station and ascend to the grassy ridge of the Zeigersattel(1,920 m), a fantastic vantage point. Directly across from us rises the impressive Höfats with its steep grassy slopes and four jagged peaks. From the saddle, we follow the upper of the two trails leading to the left, cross the mountain cirque with postcard-perfect views of the glistening blue Seealpsee, and lose a bit of elevation along the west side of the Großer
