The hike to Laguna Esmeralda is an easy to moderately difficult day hike near Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego. The lagoon is located in the area of the Valle de Tierra Mayor to the north-east of Ushuaia. Its name refers to the often greenish water color, which is enhanced by fine rock flour from the surrounding heights. The trail is one of the most popular destinations for a half-day in Tierra del Fuego, as we immerse ourselves in a distinctly sub-Antarctic landscape without any technical difficulties. Typical of the region are lenga forests, peaty wetlands and the tracks of introduced beavers, which have altered the terrain in many places. At the head of the valley, we are faced with an impressive backdrop of jagged mountains. Depending on the view, you can make out striking peaks and ridges of the Sierra Alvear around the lagoon; the mountains around the Ojo del Albino, which lies above the valley, are often mentioned.
