Our hike to Laguna Azul takes us deep into the southern Patagonian wilderness, characterized by evergreen southern beech forests, clear glacial lakes and an abundance of endemic animals. In the Los Huemules nature reserve, north of El Chaltén, we experience a privately managed natural wonder that reserves 95% of its area for nature conservation. We start at the information point and walk along narrow, well-marked paths through dense forest that is particularly wind and cold-adapted. Again and again, the trees open up and allow us fantastic views of the Laguna Azul, Laguna Verde and surrounding peaks such as Fitz Roy, Cerro Eléctrico and Gorra Blanca. The region is home to rare mammals such as the Huemul deer and is also inhabited by puma, fox and hare. The wetlands and the lagoon are home to numerous species of ducks (e.g. spectacled duck, ruddy duck), geese and, if we are lucky, we may even spot the Andean condor in the air.
