The Lagoa da Serpe (Snake Lake) is, like many small lakes in the Trevinca massif, a legacy of the Ice Age. The path there leads over the 1841 m high Fial and with its wide views into the heart of the distinctive mountain region, almost alpine feelings arise. According to legend, an enchanted black-haired beauty lives by the lake. At dawn on Midsummer's Night, she transforms with the first rays of the sun into a huge snake, which is freed from her spell by the young man who dares to spit into her open mouth. A brave bachelor from Ponte once courageously took on the task, but when the mighty monster made the mountains quake with her hissing, he fled in horror, so the young woman still has to wait for her savior.
Coming from Vilanova, we go left down into the hamlet at the first opportunity in Ponte, cross the bridge, and then turn left out of the village. The asphalt ends soon after; shortly afterward, at a fork by a house with a large gate, we follow the sign "Lagoa da Serpe" to the right. Shortly after, a signposted path branches off to the right from the field path, while the slightly longer variant continues straight ahead. Initially, the path running through broom and heath may be a bit overgrown; in the early morning hours, it lies in the shade and can be quite cool. At a yellow-white marked post, the path veers slightly left, climbs in zigzags, and becomes gradually easier to walk. As the elevation increases, the view opens back into the valley of Ponte; then the path turns eastward.
