Lago Federa - Small loop
Even for those who know everything in the Dolomites, a visit to Lake Federa is a feast every time. Its location at the foot of the Croda da Lago, in front of the Becco di Mezzodi ("clock hand of Cortina"), makes this gem a Dolomite superlative. The route described here starts on the Falzarego road just below Pecol and also passes the rock obelisk of Becco d'Aial, which rewards climbers with a magnificent panoramic view.
From the parking lot on the Falzarego road, descend on a marked path on wooded slopes in a westerly direction, later on iron steps down to Lago Ciòu del Contè, 1415 m, in Val Costeana. Cross the dam wall, then take trail no. 430 to the left uphill to a fork and straight on to Lago d'Aial, 1412 m. From the fork, take trail no. 431 in the forest steeply southwards up to a flattening (to the right to Becco d'Aial; see variant) and over a hill into a high valley with the ruined Alpe di Formin, 1791 m. Turn right under a steep ascent and then up the forest slopes to the south to a beautiful viewpoint. Follow the wide footpath up the sloping plateau "La Stiè" to Lago Federa, situated on a large terrace beneath the walls of the Croda da Lago. From there, follow trail no. 434 to the left to the Rif. Croda da Lago, 2046 m.Follow trail no. 434 northwards along the shore of Lake Federa, then across a terrace to the northern corner, 2090 m, of the Croda da Lago massif. Descend a steep forest slope
