Above the largest tarn in the Vosges – short and sweet

Lac Blanc is probably the most visited tarn in the entire Vosges. This is undoubtedly because you can drive right up to its shore. One can easily imagine the crowds on beautiful weekends. Therefore, the suggested quick tour here is better suited for a weekday, especially since many of the excursionists might not be fit enough for the near-prealpine trails at the top edge of the steep slopes in which the lake is nestled. What you can see there in two hours of walking is truly unique in our latitudes outside the Alps.

We start in the gentle pass landscape of Col du Calvaire. To the right of the road towards Lac Blanc, a trail begins marked with a red and temporarily also a yellow rectangle. We follow it, with the yellow sign leaving to the left after a few minutes, down towards the already visible Lac Blanc. Still in the forest, we climb a steep slope (unproblematic) and then hike along the upper edge of the steep slope to the lakeshore. The increasingly lighter forest, more and more interspersed with dwarf pines, soon allows deep views of Lac Blanc and the steep flank on its southern shore with the distinctive rock tower, the so-called Château Hans, whose 150 m high rock face is one of the most challenging climbing targets in the Vosges. At a fork, we continue straight ahead, now orienting ourselves by the red-white-red rectangle (the red rectangle turns right), and enjoy an exceptionally impressive stretch of trail with ever more fascinating deep views of the lake. It ends at a splendidly situated
