The highlands of Montredonnais hold pleasant surprises: relics of hamlets forgotten deep in the valleys, wide panoramas stretching to the Pyrenees, and a building dedicated for centuries to the passion for the stars.

Country Astronomers
In 1610, the "tout carrée", a recognized astronomical observatory considered the oldest in France, was built in Montredon-Labessonnié by Guillaume le Nautonnier, the king's geographer, specialist in the compass and maritime navigation, astronomer, and mathematician. In 1984, the commune inaugurated one of the twenty most important amateur observatories in France. A planetarium now exists, unique of its kind in a rural environment. Planetarium shows and observation evenings dominate the activities. Hydropneumatic rockets are also built, and school involvement becomes a driving force. External interventions by local scientists develop and, in 1998, a Leisure and Scientific Books Fair was born.
