According to legend, the springs were discovered in 1390 when the rubble of a barn was cleared away, which the jealous knight Ulrich von Ellerbach had set on fire with his wife Adelheid inside. Miraculously, the body of the innocent deceased remained unharmed. In 1418, the imperial abbey Ursberg acquired the spa, which it retained until secularization in 1802. In 1891, Dominikus Ringeisen bought it. He also introduced the water treatments of his friend Sebastian Kneipp. These, alongside the spa stone (so-called peloid) probably formed from volcanic ash and the healing Adelheid spring that flows through it, are the special features of the widely known spa.
From Krumbach station, 513 m, crossing the B 16, we go straight ahead on Lichtenstein Street. Directly at the Kammel bridge, using a pedestrian underpass to change sides, we then turn immediately right, walk straight through the city garden and – past the playground and kindergarten – a short stretch on the adjoining Mühl Street. Then we take the bridge over the dammed Kammel at the Mühl chapel, from which the Lower Mill can be seen to the right. It was in operation until 1966; the mill wheel now generates electricity for about five households. With a view of St. Michael's parish church perched on the castle hill – here the castle itself stands, invisible in strong foliage – we continue to the left through the park. Crossing the next bridge again, we go right further along the Kammel's riverside promenade. At the next bridge, we now leave this idyllic corner by turning left.
