An 8 km long circular route around the Krombachtalsperre reservoir
The Krombachtalsperre nature reserve, very close to Rehe, is a paradise for bathers, water sports enthusiasts, campers, cyclists, and hikers alike.
The largest body of water in the Hoher Westerwald covers an area of 93 hectares and holds about 4.25 million cubic meters of water.
Sandy beaches and sunny meadows attract visitors at the shore. Swimming, surfing, sailing, pedal boating – the range of possibilities is almost unlimited, so that even families with children, where everyone has different interests, can bring everything together under the proverbial one roof. And when children are not in the mood for a dip in the cool water, they will enthusiastically visit the beautiful playground.
Part of the Krombachtalsperre area is designated as a bird sanctuary and offers many rare marsh and water birds an ideal breeding ground. Additionally, countless migratory birds use the Krombachtalsperre as a welcome stopover.
The Krombachtalsperre is surrounded by dense deciduous and coniferous forests, which walkers and hikers enjoy visiting to experience the peace and untouched nature.

Safety information
If you think certain sections of the path are not passable for you, you should bypass them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery.
Pay special attention in autumn, as fallen leaves on the ground can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You have to expect these kinds of path impairments when hiking.
Although the path is consistently well marked, you should always carry a suitable hiking map for safety reasons or download the free app "Rheinland-Pfalz erleben".

Roadbook
The hike starts at the parking lot of the campsite „Welter's Camping“ in Rehe.
Through a small forest and across meadows, you reach the lake. Past some ponds, you continue to the former railway embankment and reach a viewpoint with an information board about the nature reserve. From here, waterfowl can be observed just as well as sailors and surfers.
A nice picnic spot can be found further along the route before the path turns behind the dam of the Krombachtalsperre reservoir. Here you can
learn about the „energy nature trail“ before you reach the sailing club and the restaurant on the Hessian side of the reservoir. After a short stretch on
a safe path beside the road, the relaxed, quiet forest path follows back to the starting point.
