From Kröslin we hike to the small fishing harbor Freest, which is located at the mouth of the Peenestrom into the Baltic Sea on the mainland. At the Freest local history museum in the former customs house, fish carpets are woven according to traditional patterns and offered for sale.
Our hike begins at the bus stop "Kröslin, Hafen" near the church in Kröslin. We walk along Bahnhofstraße, which soon turns into Freester Straße, heading north until behind the last houses the Peene dike begins on the right. Here we turn right onto the dike path, which is part of the Baltic Sea Coast nature trail and offers us numerous views. Ahead of us we see Peenemünde with the large power plant building of the Army Research Facility, which houses the Historical-Technical Museum Peenemünde. After 1 km the path turns left at a lake marker; now we hike northwards along the dike on the reed-lined shores of the Peenestrom. On the horizon beyond the Greifswald Bodden, we can see the chalk cliffs of the Mönchgut peninsula on Rügen. Then we pass a pumping station used for draining the meadows to the west. Before the path turns left again at a bench, we see on the right the small island of Dänholm located in front of the mainland; beyond the bend, out in the open sea, the protected island of
