To the Križ Plateaus and to the Križ Lakes
The Kriški Podi or Križ Plateaus are a fascinating karst plateau framed by several peaks: Planja, Razor, Križ, Stenar, Bovški Gamsovec, Pihavec. Like spectator stands in an amphitheater, they group around the three Križ Lakes, a small wonder in the permeable rock. To the south, the Kriški Podi drop steeply with rock faces into the Zadnjica, an incredibly impressive, wild landscape. At the edge of the drop stands the Pogačnik House, as if it were the stage for this stone amphitheater. It's unimaginable that a gentle path leads from the wild Zadnjica up to the hut, yet it is so: Thanks to World War I and the countless prisoners of war, a comfortable path winds up the steep slope in numerous flat switchbacks, enabling us today a pleasant, energy-saving climb. We experience the karst world of the Kriški Podi best on a tour to the Križ, the namesake of this stony wonderland.

From the parking lot in the Zadnjica valley, we walk 1.5 km on the gravel road to a fork, turn onto the left road, and follow it north to the base station of the material cable car. Here begins the former military path that leads uphill in a consistent gentle incline. A bench at 1550 m invites to rest; then we continue hiking until a trail branches off to the first and most beautiful lake, the lower Križ lake (Sp. Kriško jezero) – after 10 minutes, we stand at its shore at 1880 m. Back on the path, we continue upwards to the Pogačnikov dom at 2050 m. Behind the hut, we briefly descend north, say farewell to the trail leading to Razor to the left, and continue north. The trail cleverly winds over the karst plateau, bypassing dolines and juniper fields, over small rock steps and flat karst fields, passing the middle and upper lakes into a notch west of the Križ with a tremendous view deep into the Krnica. Now we follow the markings uphill over the west ridge; the ascent from the Krnica
